I had to go UB City recently, for a dinner. As I was debating with myself the route to take, I realised that there is no simple way to get there. Every route is convoluted, and more than a couple of times longer than the normal, simple one. The obvious route to take, from Corporation/Hudson Circle is below:

This route is less than a km drive. However, Vittal Mallya road is now a one way, which means that the right turn indicated in the map is not legal.
Since the right turn is no longer possible, you can keep going straight on Kasturba Road, but there is no right turn there. You now have to go on to Chinnaswamy Grounds, to come to Minsk square, near the old Fighter plane model. But there is no right turn or U turn there, so you have to go to GPO………… you get the idea. The map is below. This route is about 5 kms, 4 more than the one above.

Another route is similarly convoluted, and about the same distance. Map is below (Ignore arrow marks):

Go on to Vittal Mallya road, past Mallya hospital, take a left to Lavelle road and get to UB City. If you miss that , go to FM Cariappa Road, onto museum road and then to St Marks road, then to Lavelle road and to UB City.
Given the profusion of one ways and road constructions and widenings in the Central Business District and elsewhere, a lot of such routes must exist. It’ll be a great exercise to map all of these. Just make your own maps, and post them here or on your own blogs, and post back links. We can see what we get.
1 Km , You should have walked
Here’s an idea: graph out these kind of inconveniences on a layer superimposed on top of a city map. And write algorithms for shortest paths given the one ways and stuff, you should be able to provide cognizant advice to the Bangalore traffic police about routing traffic effectively. You will have to factor in importance of places as well, for ex UB City would rate very low on the importance scale and Sri Plague Mariammana Gudi (which is precariously situated in the middle of the barely 10ft wide Thyagarajanagar main road) would be rated close to infinity.
I am planning on making a separate blog called roadside special, covering only two things, humps ( the kind I cataloged here http://riteshnayak.com/moffe/microshare.php?id=61 ) and pothole/speedbreaker ridden intersections.
hey
i dont think that there is a “no-right turn” rule at the end of kasturba road/MG road junction??!! if i am right, then you take a U turn into Kasturba road, then head in the direction of kanteerva stadium,.. you are still on kasturba road except on the opposite direction.
on the left side, after sundaram motors, you get a left into the UB city. you can take that no??
@nikhil, There is no U turn at the end of Kasturba road, or a right turn into Lavelle road. The U Turn is anyway useless, because Vittal Mallya road is a one way now because of some construction, and you cannot take a left turn to go into UB City. If you did take a U turn, you would have had to take a left at British Museum and then go into Lavelle road and come around to UB City. But all of that is besides the point.
The point is there are too many inconveniences of this kind around, and no coherent effort by anybody to identify and mitigate them.
if you wldve travelled this far here…u wldve made it from one end of the island to the other…:)
Will I need a GPS in b’lore.
Will tell you a funny thing here. We went to Montreal. The place has a signal at every intersection and every 20 steps there is an intersection.
Our GPSlady got confused and stopped telling us he route .
I ain’t kidding!
